Brasenose college, Oxford was jointly founded in 1509 by a powerful Bishop and wealthy lawyer, on the footprint of the medieval Brasenose Hall, named after its 12th century door knocker.
Brasenose rose to prominence after 1785 where it was for many years ranked in the top three Oxford colleges in student numbers, wealth, and social standing.
During the 19th century it became a byword for masculine sporting prowess and yet in 1974 it was one of the first colleges to admit women.
It has also had its fair share of famous alumni and good academic results.
